The letter that started it all
|
Two weeks after the massive quake struck Port Au Prince Haiti, My daughter and I were watching a telethon to raise money for disaster relief. She became absolutely insistent that we donate. But, as it is for many right now, money is stressfully tight, and what tiny amount I could even try to afford felt so minute and impersonal in the face of what these victims were facing.
I told her we would “try” - that I’d wait and see if maybe we could send just a few dollars, still feeling that that was inadequate but figuring she’d let it go…. she didn’t. Instead, bound and determined to make a difference, determined to send some
love and hope, she brought me a bag containing 3 stuffed animals, a fuzzy pillow and a small blanket. Then she handed me the letter she had written:
"To whom it may concern,
please give these to any child who needs a hug or a little love in their life right now. I hope that everyone gets another chance to see their family, friends, or anyone close to their hearts.
From the bottom of my heart
Love,
Sophia Rose Saltzman, age 10, 4th grade
P.S. This truly means a lot to me"
My heart both swelled and broke at the same time. Swelled to see the innocence and wholesomeness of love given as freely as only a child can give it – with the same wide eyes that once believed in Santa. And my heart broke…. for all of the innocent children trying to just survive right now in Haiti.
I felt that this was a great way to give! A way that we could feel the difference we could make in the life a child that is feeling alone or frightened in the wake of this terrible tragedy and maybe doesn’t understand that necessities are – well – necessary….
I began to make phone calls to see how we could follow through…
Nobody could help us help a child one to one. Every organization we contacted said the same thing, “Sorry, we can only accept monetary donations at this time.” All of the big corporations had all they could do to try to help with food and supplies, and all of the major charities were so overwhelmed with fielding cash donations that nobody could handle the transport of “comfort goods”…
It felt like a dead end
– Until the Red Cross and CARE offered a contact to the Pastor of Ebenezer Child of God. Pastor Gerald Jean-Jaques
was slated for travel to Haiti in March.
He had already begun the task of collecting toys and comfort goods to take along and was more than willing – thankful actually - to help us get our children involved and so…
Kids to Kids Heart to Heart for Haiti was born
This was a tremendous opportunity for any parents and children that
wished to be involved to write a kind note and donate stuffed toys, soft pillows, and snuggly blankets that will all be loved by the children of Haiti - Children who have, right now, very little to cling to – many with no parents or siblings left to comfort them.
**The Pastor has volunteered to share the letters and will take digital photos of his deliveries for us to post on this site when returns.
